Sverigebilden i Vanity Fair

Vanity Fairs resebilaga är som en jetsetguide. Men bland reportage om det går att resa etiskt i Burma marknadsförs Stockholm med "Blondes! Herring! Socialism!" Och den lätt retoriska frågan: "Is this the most civilised city in northern Europe."
AA Gill sammanfattar sina intryck så här:
"The point of all this history is that Sweden was once the diametric opposite of everything we associate it with today: warmongering, intolerant, reactionary, superstitious, hierarchical and dirt-poor. And then, by some cataclysm, by some late-night depressive flash of enlightenment, a sauna-and-schnapps-induced reality check, they decided, all together, synchronistically, to change, not just the cushions and curtains, but everything."

(Det är för övrigt en paradox att den svenska välfärdsmodellen numera är mer omhuldad utomlands än härhemma. I länder som Storbritannien, Tyskland och Frankrike hänvisas regelbundet till Sverige som en intressant föregångare. Här hemma har decennier av självöverskattning slått över i ett dissande klimat.)
